EVENT SPEAKER

OUR EVENT SPEAKER

Dr. Vanessa Trujillo, Senior Conservation Program Manager, National Parks Conservation Association - Vanessa grew up in North Florida and earned her BS in Biology from the University of Florida and went on to earn her PhD from Florida International University with a specialization in Conservation Biology. Her professional interests are centered around developing programs that bring together multiple stakeholders towards a common goal of conserving and learning about our world's biodiversity. Prior to joining us at NPCA, she worked as a leader within the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department (one of our country’s largest county-level parks departments), and there she directed programs at the Fruit and Spice Park in South Florida. She also previously served at another South Florida landmark well-known for the amazing coastal and rare habitats it protects - the Deering Estate. A common thread in her work has been always making efforts to connect people and parks for life. She is excited to continue that work and now refocus on connecting people with our treasured national parks, and will be both contributing to existing priority campaigns in the Sun Coast region as well as helping to build out new and expanded work throughout the region.

How it Affects Us All
The national parks are currently confronting their most significant challenge in the form of climate change. The various elements that make these parks special, including their flora and fauna, water bodies, glaciers, coastlines, and historical landmarks, are already feeling the impact of climate-related stress. This collective strain is pushing our public lands into a state of crisis. By closely observing the changes occurring in national parks, we gain valuable insights into the potential risks we face if we do not earnestly tackle the climate crisis.
