Kenzie Horton is a native Floridian, who received her Bachelor of Marine Science degree from the University of South Florida in 2016, where she worked in a biomechanic lab focusing on the epidermis of 4 shark species. In 2021, she began her masters at Jacksonville University studying the space use of white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in their overwintering residency area. She is also currently working as a Fisheries Biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in the Fisheries Independent Monitoring program to provide data on managed and non-managed fish and select macro-invertebrates. In addition to her academic and professional work, she has participated in a variety of outreach events where she teaches the importance of sharks and their roles within the environment.
Sharks are vital to our world's oceans and are a key part to keeping the ecosystems in balance. Over the years, the stigma around sharks has been a complicated one and caused unnecessary fear around these important individuals. As we learn more about these animals, we can begin to create a healthy respect and develop a passion to protect and conserve them.
